#dchat: Let's talk emergence

Starlings are one example of emergence in nature. (Photo by Flickr user muffinn) What does leadership look like in an organization where there is no leader? Emergent systems -- think non-hierarchical collectives, such as ant farms and flocks of starlings -- function like this. So does, in many ways, the d.school.

We've visited the subject of emergence with George Kembel, the global director and co-founder of the d.school. If you missed it, it's worth a read before joining this week's chat. Justin Ferrell, the Levinthal Director of Fellowships at the d.school and our first #dchat guest, will be back for #dchat on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 6pm PT to discuss and take your questions about emergent systems. How do they work? What does it take to get one started? What is it like to work within an emergent system?

It's worth noting that Justin is currently reading Steven Johnson's "Emergence". So, if you're reading it, have read it or are interested, you'll definitely want to join this chat.

In the meantime, check out the recap of last week's #dchat with d.school fellow Anne Gibbon (@AlcinoeSea). We were a bit light due to the State of the Union, but thanks to everyone who joined in!
